In the present study, academic performance of students using ‘grade-skipping’ means for accelerating their education (i.e. ‘GS’ students as the experimental group) was compared with those who have never used such accelerating approaches (i.e., ‘Non-GS’ students as the control group). The sample included 60 GS and 90 Non-GS students randomly selected from all male and female Ahvaz primary school students. According to the main hypothesis of this study, a significant difference was expected to be found between academic performance of the two groups. GPAs for the academic year prior to and the one following ‘grade-skipping’ were used as indices of students’ academic performance. Data analysis uncovered no significant difference between the two groups regarding their academic performance. This finding continued to persist even two years folowing the grade-skipping year, both for male and female subjects.

For the School of Linguistic Analysis, the exclusive task of philosophy is to analyse language and what has a linguistic nature, such as concepts and propositions. Though I am not going to limit all capabilities of philosophy to this, analysing language is one of its main tasks. That is why philosophers of education try to analyse educational institutions and concepts. In this paper, I will try to analyse the concept of “Islamic University” with a view to the paradoxical meaning it may have. Some believe that for a university to be Islamic, knowledge and the scientific content of its academic curricula must be Islamic, and that is what seems to be paradoxical. This is so because based on the currently accepted meaning of ‘science’, there is a logical gap between science and value. That is, science is impartial to and independent of values. To solve this problem, we need to provide an alternative meaning for science on the basis of which science and the process of scientific research involve values.

This article reports a research on the relationship between some demographic factors and man’s violence against his wife. In this respect, some hypotheses were tested about the relationship between different demographic factors (age, education, income, occupation, number of children, the length of marriage and the satisfaction from marriage), and man’s violence (psychological, physical, severe and total) against his wife. 153 women from different parts of Ahvaz were selected randomly and The Woman Abuse Scale and a researcher-made questionnaire were used for collecting data. The results indicate that among different variables under study, satisfaction from marriage had the lowest risk of wife abuse. Education of both men and their wives had negative correlations with total violence, but only men’s education was negatively correlated with psychological violence. The men and their wives’ education were negatively correlated with physical violence, but the length of marriage and the number of children related positively to wife abuse. The multiple regression analyses showed that satisfaction from marriage is the best predictor of all types of wife abuse. Also the results indicate that satisfaction from marriage, education of men and the length of marriage are good predictors of physical abuse.

The present study was aimed at comparing the effects of threat of mild with severe punishments in inducing negative attitudes toward cheating and commission of cheating in mathematics course. The sample included 288 Ahvaz third-grade male students belonging to low, moderate and high Socio-Economic Status (SES) families. The data analyses revealed that threat of mild punishment was more effective than threat of severe punishment in yielding negative attitudes toward cheating. This finding persisted regardless of time of ‘attitude-change’ measurement. Also, threat of mild punishment was more effective than threat of severe punishment in reducing the actual likelihood of committing cheating. Furthermore, subjects from higher SES were found to express more negative attitudes toward cheating than those from lower SES.

This study was aimed at comparing the performance of 6- to 8-year old male and female students of Bushehr’s elementary schools in Bendr-Gestalt Test (BGT) measuring children’s maturational aspects. In this study, 589 subjects (398 boys and 181 girls) were randomly selected from 6-, 7- and 8-year old students studying in the first through third grades. The test was administered and scored according to the Kopitz System (Kopitz, 1963, 1975). The results of a factor analysis carried out on the data confirmed the first two hypotheses of this study indicating significant differences in the maturational patterns of boys and girls as well as students across the three age groups. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance performed on the data showed significant differences among the three age groups regarding all four types of classic errors in BGT (i.e., Distortion, Rotation, Integration and perseveration). According to these findings, the third hypothesis of the study and its subsidiary hypotheses (except for rotation) was also confirmed. The fourth hypothesis of this study was also confirmed indicating a significant relationship between socio - economic status and performance on the maturation aspects of BGT. Finally, these data imply that Iranian 7 and 8- year old students follow a pattern of maturation similar to those reported by Kopitz. Iranian 6-year old students, however, seem to prevail a higher (i.e, faster) maturational pattern than theif age-equivalent counterparts (as reported by Kopitz, 1975).

Locus of control is a personality characteristic which refers to a constellation of beliefs and expectations pertaining to people or factors controlling rewards and punishments in one’s life. Some people have an internal and others hold an external locus of control. Those with internal locus of control believe that hard-working and ‘responsible behavior’ yield positive outcomes. In contrast, those having external locus of control maintain that ‘out-of-control’ factors such as ‘unknown forces’, ‘chance’ and ‘other people’s influences’ control the outcome of their behavior. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between parents’ attitudes toward child rearing and children’s locus of control. In this study, three types of attitudes toward child rearing were tapped, namely Dominating, Ignoring and Possessive. The Sample which was randomly selected from students studying in Dezful’s Guidance Schools, included 217 third-grade boys and girls. Nearly, all four hypotheses and their subsidiary derived hypotheses were confirmed. Based upon these findings, a number of suggestions regarding development and modification of children’s locus of control are offered to parents and teachers.

Although the Modern Language Association and other style manuals describe in exquisite detail “how” to cite the literature, explicit tutorials on when” to cite are nonexistent. Most journals provide instructions to authors but also fail to give explicit guidance on when to cite. In spite of numerous studies of citation behavior and the wide recognition by editors of the need acknowledge intellectual debts, authors and referees need explicit reminders as to when formal references or acknowledgments are appropriate. Since referencing is both subjective and culturally based, there can be no absolutes about when to cite. Hence, it is unlikely that algorithmic documentation of texts can ever meet the competing requirements for relevance, selectivity, and comprehensiveness. What is common wisdom in one domain may be new or unique in another. A three-year experiment involving graduate students demonstrated the varying perceptions of the need for documentation of terminology, ideas, methods, and so forth. A tentajive tutorial is suggested for journal editors that should be modified in each scholarly context.
