This study examined the philosophical- ideological views of male high school students in Ahvaz regarding praying. The statistical population of this study comprised the third grade high school sinior students. Two samples were used in this study. The first sample consisted of 120 students who were used for construction of a questionnaire. The second sample consisted of 320 students, who were selected randomly and used for identiI’ing the factors. Factor analysis was used for analyzing the data. The results showed that four factors were related to praying behavior of the students. These factors are: designated as individual- psychological, worshiping-obligational, socio-culturai and salvational.

This study examined the effects of assertive training on self-esteem, mental health, assertiveness, and social anxiety of anxious high school boys in Abvaz. The original sample was 400 students who were randomly selected from Abvaz high schools. From this group, 90 students were diagnosed as anxious and were randomly assigned to the following three groups: experimental, placebo, and control. The scales used for this study were Assertiveness Scale for Adolescents, Coopersmith Self-esteem, Social Anxiety Scale, and SCL-90. The design was a pre-post test with control groups. Both experimental and control groups were pre- and post-tested. but only the experimental group received the treatment. The results showed that teaching assertiveness increased self-esteem, mental health and assertion, and decreased social anxiety.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the simple and multiple relationships of important antecedents of mastery goal orientation and its relationship with academic performance of first grade boy students at Ahvaz high schools. In this study, positive self- esteem, social responsibility goal, school belonging, positive attitudes toward education, perceptions of teacher’s and parent’s mastery goals were considered as antecedental variables and mastery goal orientations as the criterion variable. Also, mastery goal orientation is considered as the independent variable and academic performance as the dependent variable. The research sample consisted of 360 first grade boy students studying at Altvaz high schools in the academic year of 2000-2001. The sample was selected by a random multistage sampling method. The measurement of variables was done by some of the scales of the patterns of adaptive learning scales, and some other scales. The results of this research indicate that there are significant positive relationships between all antecedent variables and mastery goal orientation. There was also a multiple correlation between all antecedent variables and mastery goal orientation. Also, mastery goal orientation had a significant positive relationship with academic performance.

Using an experimental research design, the present study exmined the effectiveness of three kinds of therapy in the management of chronic back- pain among Ahvaz male high school teachers. The sample consisted of 100 patients suffering from chronic backpain. Twenty five subjects were randomly assigned to each one of the following four conditions: Three experimental groups (i.e., cognitive, relaxation and behavioral interventions) and one control group. The three management approaches exercised were stress inoculation (Miechenbaum and Turk, 1976), progressive muscular relaxation (Jacobson, 1962), and stimulus control (Kaunfer, 1980). Improvement in pain beliefs, pain behavior, pain self-efficacy, and depression were all employed as the four major improvement indices of pain management and treatment. The Pain Measures (Zarkowfska, 1988), Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (Nickolas, 1989), Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1961) and Chronic Pain Test (Asghari Moghaddam, 1995) were used to measure the dependent variables. Results of the preliminary stage indicated that the afore-mentioned pain measures are psychometrically sound, reliable and valid. Data analysis revealed that the treatment methods used are effective in reducing the chronic backpain indices. A one-way analysis of variance showed significant differences among the three treatment conditions; A Tukey test showed that cognitive group and progressive muscular relaxation group were superior to the control group in reducing the pain beliefs and depression. The behavioral group, however, showed no significant difference with the control group. Furthermore, all three experimental conditions were significantly more effective than the control condition in reducing the pain self-efficacy and pain behavior

This study was designed to examine the distribution of the University of Shahid Chamran Students’ identities across the four types of identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moritorium and identity achieved. The main hypothesis posited that the students, in general, and male and female students, separately, are distributed differently across the above four types of identity. Chi square analyses confivmed all the hypotheses. The results showed that the hypotheses were confirmed as well for the ideological and interpersonal dimensions were also confirmed. The findings were discussed according to Erickson’s and Marcia’s views.

This research project was aimed at construction and validation of a short scale for the measurement of reality distortion. Factor analysis of the data derived from administration of a preliminary scale to a sample of Shahid Chamran University undergraduate students (Ahvaz, Iran) yielded a 10-item scale entitled Alwaz Reality Distortion Inventory (ARDI). The test-retest reliability and internal consistency coefficients of ARDI were found to be satisfactory. Validation of ARDI was assessed by its concurrent administration with Marlowe- Crowne’s Social Desirability Scale, a construct definition of reality distortion, and three Lie Sub-Scales derived from Mini-Mult MMPI, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, and Coopersmith Self-Esteem Scale. Results indicate that psychometric characteristics of ARDI are very satisfactory, and thus could be employed as a reliable and valid self-report inventory for measuring reality distortion. Keyword: reality distortion, lie scale, social desirability

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of counseling on reduction of depression and hopelessness in leukemic patients, who were admitted at Shafa Hospital in Ahvaz. One hundred leukemic male and female subjects (ii to 20 years) were studied, and 26 of them were diagnosed as depressed. It was hypothesized that there was a significant difference in the depression and hopelessness of the control and experimental groups aftet counseling. A sample of 26 leukemic-depressed male and female subjects were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in counseling for S sessions. Beck Depression inventory, Children’s Depression Scale (abbreviated lorm), and Beck Hopelessness Scale for children were used in this study. Beck Depression Inventory was used as a screening tool, but the other two scales were used for pre-and post-testing. The results showed a significant reduction in both the rate of depression and hopelessness in leukemic patients after counseling. This research shows the importance of counseling in reducing the depression and hopelessness of leukemic patients.

Reference department is one of the most important constituents of every library and reference services represent the efforts made in any library. The history of reference services dales back to centuries ago, though modern reference services started in late 19th century. To offer desirable reference services demands good interpersonal ielationships as well as knowledge and skills. Development of universities and emphasis on research in particular, are major factors in flourishing reference services in the United Stales. Today, due to the emergence of information technologies, librarians encounter a challenge to maintain their social entity. This article, surveys the emergence and the historical trend of development of reference services. It also studies the effects of recent innovations in reference services and, finally, gives some recommendations.
